What you should know about traveling to the Big Island:

The Big Island offers a combination of things you could see or do on the other Hawaiian islands and more. You could easily make this the only island on a trip to Hawaii. In order to see the Big Island you will need to rent a car. The Big Island is a great place to explore. Most rental car companies rent jeeps and SUV's in Hawaii but the rental contract doesn't allow you to drive off road or on the Saddle Road. Accommodations are in several areas mostly concentrated along the Kohala cost and along Ali'i Drive in Kailua Kona, with some hotels in Hilo and B&B's sprinkled around the island including the Volcano area which also has a hotel located in the national park. Some people stay in one hotel the entire time and others choose to see the island in a circular fashion, staying in a couple of places. If you are just interested in seeing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park it would be best to fly into Hilo. Hilo tends to get a lot of rain so it is not as desired for longer stays as the Kona side is.

Volcano Update

The Big Island (the island of Hawaii) is larger than all of the other islands combined. On Hawaii 11 of the 13 climate zones of the world are represented. There are so many things to see and do on the Island of Hawaii but the most famous is the active Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Several airlines have direct flights to Kona on the Big Island from the mainland. There are also inter-island flights to Kona and Hilo. Kona has beautiful sunsets and is the location of the Ironman Triathlon in October.
